Dining lighting

If the budget allows only one truly good fixture in the whole house, we always advise placing it over the dining table. Nowhere does light touch family life more.

Why the dining table?

The dining table is the one place where the whole family looks at each other every day, up close, under a fixed light source. The light here decides whether the food looks appetising, whether the face across from you looks rosy, and whether dinner feels like a reunion or a shift at work. It is also the fixture guests notice first and remember longest.

The numbers that must be right

Hanging height: the bottom of the shade 75–90cm above the tabletop — low enough for an intimate pool of light, high enough not to block the view across the table. Size: the shade's diameter should be about a half to two-thirds the table's width; tables longer than 2m should use two or three small fixtures or a linear one. Light level: 300–450 lux on the tabletop is enough, letting the rest of the dining room fall away — it is this contrast that creates the warmth.

Bright table, soft room — the never-dated formula of every fine-dining restaurant.

Choosing the fixture: where the brand makes a real difference

This is exactly where classic European designs prove their worth: multi-layered shades that fully hide the light point from every seat, CRI 95 or above to keep food and skin true, dim-to-warm so the same fixture serves both a quick breakfast and a wine-lit dinner. A fixture like this lasts 20 years — which works out to just a few hundred đồng per family dinner.

When designing a dining room, IDA Lighting starts from the dining-table fixture and works outward — because everything else in the room is merely a backdrop to the moment the family sits down together.
